Interpreting the 2022-23 Enrollment Proposal

The student enrollment proposal for 2022-2023 was unveiled yesterday on Oct. 5th. With two new elementary schools opening, and many overcrowded schools, WCPSS Student Assignment is proposing several changes in school districting to the School Board. Keep in mind these changes are now public but won’t be final and approved until the December board meeting. Here is what you need to know . . .

New Barton Pond Elementary School:

  • The new Barton Pond Elementary in North Raleigh will pull from the current base areas for Sycamore Creek, Jeffrey’s Grove, Leesville and a few others. You can check your address to see if you are proposed to attend one of the new schools. Preview Proposed Base Assignments
  • Current 4th graders (rising 5th graders) assigned to a new elementary school can apply to stay at their school under stability transfers. A younger sibling can apply to stay with them only for that 2022-23 year. Read more
  • Community feedback is welcomed and is considered as they review and revise the plan. Online Forum

New Apex Friendship Elementary School:

  • The base area for the new Apex Friendship ES will pull from both Olive Chapel ES and Scotts Ridge ES (currently overcrowded schools) You can check your address to see if you are proposed to attend the new schools. Preview Proposed Base Assignments
  • Current 4th graders (rising 5th graders) assigned to a new elementary school can apply to stay at their school under stability transfers. A younger sibling can apply to stay with them only for that 2022-23 year. Read more

New Herbert Akins Middle School:

  • The new middle school will pull from the current base areas of Fuquay-Varina MS and Holly Grove MS. You can check your address to see if you are proposed to attend the new schools. Preview Proposed Base Assignments
  • Current 7thth graders (rising 8th graders) assigned to a new middle school can apply to stay at their school under stability transfers. A younger sibling can apply to stay with them only for that 2022-23 year. Read more

Changes to Base Schools:

  • Some overcrowded schools like Abbotts Creek ES, Hortons Creek ES, Sycamore Creek ES, Mills Park MS, and Panther Creek HS, are proposed to have base area changes to relieve overcrowding and future growth. Read more
  • Other changes are being made to base areas to move students closer by assigning them to the school in their approximate area. A few of these include Underwood ES, Pleasant Grove ES, Leesville ES, Jones Dairy ES, Oak Grove ES, Root ES and Sanderson HS. You can check your address to see if you are proposed to attend the new schools.
